Amathuba – is a Xhosa word meaning  “Opportunities for the Future”

Amathuba was started by three South African mothers who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of the youth. Recognising the difficulty that the youth have to face when making that crucial decision of deciding which career path to pursue, while taking into consideration the status of the shortage of skills in South Africa, they realised that there was a huge need to assist Learners with their career guidance.

From this realisation and dream, Amathuba was born with its sole aim being to inspire school learners and to help them identify opportunities within South Africa in the fields of science, technology, tele-communications, health care, education and other key industries that will assist in the reduction of skills shortage and thereby improve the quality of life of all South Africans.

The Challenge

Many South African Learners, especially those who are currently disadvantaged, have very little or no access to career guidance facilities.  Although the GET and  FET curriculum's objective is to assist Learners in making informed subject choices to ensure that they have more job-related skills when leaving school, unfortunately the LO teachers do not have the resources to help Learners with these choices.  This is contributing to many young people leaving school without the necessary information to further their studies in an appropriate career.

Further to this a study by the HSRC shows that only one third of graduates from local FET colleges find work, which implies that the curriculums they study do not match the skills needed by the market.  The study also shows that 51% of the youth end up unemployed resulting in many leaving South Africa to find work in other countries - depleting South Africa of their educated youth and their skilled workers.

Overall Mission

The overall mission of the project is to:

Support the DOE and its Educators by providing them with career education resources to help all South Africans school Learners realise their full potential while at the same time assisting in alleviating the skills shortage in South Africa.

Amathuba’s Objectives:

  • To support the Department of Education with their LO Curriculum  Learner Outcome 5 – Orientation to the World of Work  by providing them with career guidance resources and ensuring that  the assessment standards are achieved.
  • To help the South African youth identify career opportunities within South Africa, especially those Learners who do not have the opportunity to seek professional career guidance.
  • To assist in helping reduce skill shortages (scarce skills) in certain identified and much needed  industries in South Africa in line with ASGISA.
